Volunteer Programs

Paid-Call Volunteers
&
Volunteers in Prevention

The Ocean Shores Fire & Emergency Care Department relies heavily on volunteers to help with emergency and non-emergency duties. Volunteers are divided into two programs, Paid-Call Volunteers and Volunteers in Prevention. The primary difference between the two groups is that paid-call volunteers are emergency responders, while Volunteers in Prevention perform non-emergency functions. Both Groups are equally important to the overall management of the Department to accomplish assigned goals and objectives.

Paid-Call Volunteers

Paid-Call volunteers are part of the reactive force that must be in place to deal with emergencies. These members work side-by-side with career personnel performing firefighting and life saving operations. They are assigned to one of three platoons that provide about ten days a month coverage for daily responses in the evening hours. The members also respond as a collective group to major incidents and on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Paid-Call members carry pagers and are notified by radio when to respond to the station. Because of the hours involved in this program members receive minimum wage when they respond to incidents or are involved in scheduled training. Paid-Call members also are enrolled in the State of Washington Volunteers Pension Plan with premiums paid by the Department, provided they meet minimum response and training criteria.

Volunteers In Prevention (VIP)

The Volunteers In prevention help with the pre-emergency functions of the Department. Volunteering anywhere from four hours or more per week Monday through Friday, they assist with Fire prevention, inspections, clerical work, and public education programs.

The requirements for Volunteers in Prevention duties are not as stringent as they are for the paid- call volunteers. Individuals must pass a background check and attend a minimum amount of training. Although these individuals receive no direct compensation they are eligible for a number of benefit programs that are open to other members:

Insurance for work related injuries
Members in the O.S. Firefighters association
Community and agency recognition
Identification cards
Identifying dress
Training
Career opportunities
